Geographic Information System (GIS)
Snow cover maps are transferred from the image processing system to the GIS (ArcView). In addition, several
GIS layers were digitized from topographic maps. The layers include "rivers", "lakes and reservoirs",
"glaciers", "contour lines" and "mountain peaks". Based on the contour lines, a digital elevation and
terrain model (DEM, DTM) was developed. The latter one is intensively used in image processing and
estimations of SRM input data (area - elevation curve and snow cover extent for specific elevation zones
within selected basins).
The following digital models of basins were made in the frame work of the
"Snowmelt Runoff Forecasting" project:
Snow cover depletion is then transferred to the snowmelt runoff model for forecasting purposes.
