Snowmelt Runoff Forecasting

Snowmelt is the major source of fresh water in Central Asia. The prediction of the amount of melt water in spring is f undamental for the water reservoir management, hydroelectricity production and for irrigation. The goal of the Pilot Project 3 is to set up an operational system for snowmelt runoff forecasting based on the Swiss-American Snowmelt Runoff Model (SRM) and satellite remote sensing data. SRM is based on the degree-day method and needs daily information on air temperature, precipitation and time series of snow cover maps (derived from satellite data). SRM is a very simple but efficient model for simulating and forecasting snowmelt runoff in remote basins or regions with sparse data. SRM has proved its applicability in more than 80 basins worlwide.

The flow chart for the Snowmelt Runoff Forecasting Project comprises of several fundamental modules as satellite remote sensing (digital image processing), geographic information systems (GIS), database management systems and snowmelt runoff modeling. Details to each of the modules are described below.
